Our culture has evolved in a way that has it’s people moving with less frequency and less variety which has led to a compromise in our capacity to move. A Movement Lifestyle™ is a way of living that places intentional focus on the health of your body’s movement system or Movement Health™ by engaging in movement behaviors, habits, and practices aimed at restoring your frequency, variety, and capacity to move.  When your capacity to move is more closely matched to your given ability to move, you will experience a higher quality of Movement Health™. When your capacity to move deteriorates, your Movement Health™ will suffer as will your quality of life. The result of a reduced capacity to move leads to excessive stress on your body’s movement system which can result in maladaptive changes in the body, often accompanied by pain.  Eventually, your ability to participate in activities of daily living such as climbing stairs, household chores, and sleeping, as well as the activities you love like running, skiing, spending time with friends and loved ones are adversely affected. By adopting A Movement Lifestyle™, you will overcome restrictions and limitations you have currently and reduce the likelihood of those conditions recurring.

Movement is essential to being human, therefore, everyone benefits from becoming a steward of their Movement Health™ by living A Movement Lifestyle™. No matter your age, the sooner you get started the sooner you get to reap the benefits.

The move Method™

The framework used to develop A Movement Lifestyle™ is called the MOVE Method™. The MOVE Method™ is an integration of the following four components:

  1. Move with a Movement Mindset™

  2. Move Often and Toward Optimal

  3. Move with Variation

  4. Move Everywhere/In all Your Environments

Move with a Movement Mindset™

This refers to the practice of engaging in movement behavior that is informed by your awareness of and your realization of the significance of Movement Health™. You come to understand that the health of your body’s movement system or Movement Health™ is fundamental to the quality of your life and tied directly to your longevity. You’ll develop a greater understanding of your body and how it relates to movement - body and movement literacy. You will come to bring your body to the activities of your life with the awareness of your body’s movement system and, therefore, make informed decisions on what you subject your body to. Move Often and Toward Optimal

Put simply, attention is placed on strategies and practices to assist in the return of your body’s movement system back to its optimal state of health. This may require the support found with Movement Therapy. Additionally attention is placed on promoting more movement into and throughout your daily life.

Move with Variation

Bringing variation to your movement behavior increases the favorable adaption of your body’s movement system and decreases the potential maladaptive affects that the repetitive positions and motions you perform related to the tasks you execute on a daily basis. Use more of the range of motion of your joints and move in more of the ways your body has the ability to do so. By doing so, you will preserve these abilities over your lifetime leading to greater Movement Health™, movement longevity and a higher quality of life.

Move Everywhere/In all Your Environments

If you’re like many, you move in the form of exercise, hobby, or sport and you have been conditioned to do so in certain places like the fitness center, the golf course, or the hiking trail. Here you will expand the acceptable places to move and care for your Movement Health™ to all the environments you inhabit including your home and office as well as places like the airport, hotel, and any outdoor space you find yourself in and you will intentionally build the practice of moving in meaningful ways wherever you find yourself.

A Movement Lifestyle™ Coaching Process

Step 1:  A Movement Lifestyle™ Consultation

Are we a good fit?  Let’s start with a consultation to make sure my coaching philosophy and approach is aligned with your needs and preferences.  The consultation is a complimentary 30 minute session performed in person or virtually. This is an opportunity for each of us to ask questions and get to know the other so we can determine if our partnership will meet both our needs.

  • Please click HERE to set up a consultation. If the consultation is unnecessary and you are ready to move forward, proceed to Step 2A.

Step 2A: A Movement Lifestyle™ Discovery & Assessment Session

For the A Movement Lifestyle™ Discovery & Assessment Session, you will have completed the A Movement Lifestyle™ Intake and the 5 Whys forms as sent to you shortly after scheduling your session. The intake form captures your health history, injury history, current orthopedic conditions, lifestyle variables - physical activity, nutrition, sleep, etc., as well as the objective lifestyle goals you intend to achieve.  The 5 Whys Exercise helps to identify the deep motivation behind your engagement - the desired experiences that will come as a result of achieving the objective lifestyle goals. You are driven in two ways: by the experiences you want to create - your vision and by the experiences you want to avoid and believe will happen if you don’t take action. We will capture both to help keep you engaged and accountable.

We will start this session by discussing the contents of your intake and 5 Whys forms. This will allow us to review the history of your Movement Health™, the central motivation behind your engagement in this process and the specific goals you want to achieve.

From there, we will proceed to the movement assessment. The assessment allows us to capture your current movement strengths and limitations and establish your movement baseline.  All of this information is critical to designing individualized programming to guide you successfully toward reaching your goals.
